AMRITSAR: The 3rd Punjabi Film Festival concluded here on Monday, with a vibrant finale and appeal by Punjabi film fraternity for support by the government, on infrastructure and tax. Punjabi singer Malkiat Singh said there was a need for sponsors to make the film festival a grander event. “Punjabi films have a large appeal and the festival should be organized at a larger scale:’ he said.
Comedian Rana Ranbir, who was felicitated, requested local MP Navjot Singh Sidhu to get cleared a film city project for Amritsar. Sidhu regretted that for everything, from editing to sound mixing, the Punjabi film industry has to look at Mumbai. “The Punjab Government should prop it up and implement the Goonda Act on the lines of Karnataka to stop piracy,” he said.
Veteran singer Gurmeet Bawa got the audience to their feet with her foot-tapping ‘Jugni’. Students of various colleges performed. Bawa was honoured with Prithvi Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement Award. Bawa, who has been associated with the film festival since the start, said it gave artistes an opportunity to come together and interact. She made an appeal for Punjabi cinema to be made tax-free. Actor Harbhajan Mann of ‘Jee Aayan Nu’ fame said, “We cannot compare ourselves with the Mumbai mm industry being at a relatively nascent stage, but directors like Manmohan Singh are trying to take the Punjabi film industry to a new level, which was an honour.”
